Duration of the Surgery
It takes Dr. Metwally 1 to 1 and a half hour to perform a calf
augmentation surgery.
Anesthesia Used
The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia (you will
be asleep throughout the procedure). It can also be performed under
Regional Anesthesia (anesthetic injected in the spine, similar to
that used in child birth) where only the lower body loses sensation
but you will be awake. In this case, you will be given sedation
which will make you relaxed and drowsy. You will be ready to leave
after 2 to 3 hours from the completion of your surgery.
During Your Surgery
During your surgery an incision usually 6 to 8 cm is made at the
crease behind each knee. After the incision is made Dr. Metwally
proceeds by creating a pocket for the implants in which each implant
is placed. After that, the incision is sutured and mild dressing and
bandage is applied.
After Your Surgery
After your surgery your calves will be covered with a bandage
for 5 days. You
will experience some pain during the first 48 to 72 hours. Dr.
Metwally will prescribe to you an antibiotic along with a pain
killer to prevent infection and alleviate pain. You will be asked to
wear a compression garment to support your calves during the healing
process. Your compression garment and
stitches will be removed after 2 weeks. Most people feel good enough
to go to work 7 days after their surgery is performed. As much as
possible you should keep your legs elevated and avoid strenuous
activity and exercise for 4 weeks after surgery.
Seeing Your Result
You can see your initial result immediately after you finish your
surgery. You will definitely notice a difference in the size and
shape of your calves. However, due to the swelling your calves may
appear too firm and a bit squarish in shape. The swelling will
subside gradually making your calves look more natural almost after
2 weeks. The final result often varies from one person another
depending on many factors. Some people heal faster than others for
reasons like age, implant placement and of course the surgeon’s
skills. According to Dr. Metwally’s observation of his own patients,
most of them see their final results after 6 to 8 weeks. The scar
from the calf augmentation takes 12 to 18 months to fade totally.
The result from calf augmentation is everlasting.
