Breast Reduction Surgery
 

Female breasts are every woman's most precious asset. It's the part of us that reveals most of our femininity. Women may choose to under go a breast reduction surgery for various reasons. The breasts may naturally be too large in size, they may have gained size with age. They may have become too full after weight gain. Oversized breasts often gain more attention than they should causing the woman with the condition to be embarrassed and depressed. Women with oversized breasts may be unable to wear certain clothes that show the size of their breasts. Unfortunately with the excess weight of large breasts they tend to droop making the breasts look like those of an older woman and often cause back pain as well. A breast reduction surgery can correct the breast size while also restoring it to its optimal elevated position. Breast reduction is one of the most commonly performed procedures in cosmetic plastic surgery. Breast reduction can give women a more proportional body thereby tremendously improving self esteem.
 

What is a Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast Reduction Surgery or "Reduction Mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure where large pendulous breasts are restored to smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of the woman's body. The procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter and firmer and restoring them to a higher more youthful looking position.
 


Are You a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?

You would be a good candidate for breast reduction if you feel that your breasts are too large in proportion to the rest of your body. You may feel that your breasts draw too much attention due to their enlarged size and feel uncomfortable wearing certain clothes. You may have back, neck or shoulder pain due to your large breasts. You may be unhappy with the droop in your breasts that is caused by their heavy size. Breast reduction can correct all that and combined with a breast lift can restore your breasts to a more naturally sized, firm and lifted breasts. A breast reduction surgery can be performed starting age 21.

Preparing For Your Surgery

Before your surgery, Dr. Metwally will perform a complete evaluation with you. According to your case and your desired shape and size, Dr. Metwally will explain to you the procedure that best serves your case. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from our center the day of the surgery. You should wear loose fitting clothes and bear in mind that your outfit may get soiled. Do not wear jewelry, contact lenses, or bring valuables to the operating room. Remove all body jewelry from pierced body parts.

Duration of the Surgery

It takes around 2 to 2 and a half hours for Dr. Metwally to perform a breast reduction surgery.

Anesthesia Used

The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia (you will be asleep throughout the procedure). You will be ready to leave after 2 to 3 hours from the completion of your surgery.
 

During Your Surgery

During your surgery an incision is made where it circles around the areola, extending vertically down the breast fold and forming an inverted T-shape at the breast crease. After, making the incision, the required amount of fat, tissue and skin is removed. The areola with the nipple is then relocated to a higher position relative to the new size and position of the breasts.

 

After Your Surgery

After your surgery, you will find that your breasts are covered with plaster for the first few days. After which you will be given a special bra to wear for 4 weeks. You will be a bit sore for the first 3 days. Dr. Metwally will prescribe to you an antibiotic along with a pain killer to prevent infection and alleviate pain. You may have drains to drain any fluids from your breasts for 2 days. You can shower 1 week after surgery. The stitches are removed after 2 weeks. Most people can go to work after three to five days. At first, your breasts will appear high and stiff because of the swelling but soon they will rest in their normal position.

 

Seeing Your Result

How soon the result of the Breast Reduction starts to show often varies from one person to the other depending on many factors. Some people heal faster than others for reasons like age, skin color and skin type. Other factors are related to the level of correction made in the surgery like the amount skin and tissue removed, and the surgeon’s skills. You will be able to see a difference in the size and position of your breasts almost immediately after your surgery. You will notice that your breasts are smaller and higher in their position. According to Dr. Metwally’s observation of his own patients, most of them start seeing their breast reduction results as early as the 7th day of the surgery and the final result usually takes 8 to 12 weeks. The result of a good breast reduction surgery is everlasting unless you breast feed, gain or lose a significant amount of weight.
