Breast Lift Surgery

Female breasts are every woman's most precious asset. It's the part of us that reveals most of our femininity. Women may choose to undergo a breast lift surgery for various reasons. The breasts may have drooped due to aging. They may have lost firmness after pregnancy or lactation. They may have become droopy due to significant weight gain followed by weight loss. A breast lift surgery can make the breasts firm while restoring them to a more youthful elevated position. Breast lift is one of the most commonly performed procedures in cosmetic plastic surgery.

What is a Breast Lift Surgery?

Breast Lift Surgery or "Mastopexy", is a surgical procedure where droopy breasts are restored to their best natural position and shape. In some cases, the breasts are too large as well as droopy; in this case a breast reduction procedure is performed with the lift. In other cases, an implant must be added to the breast to give the volume required for best results. In this case an implant is added through a breast augmentation procedure with the lift. Unfortunately some surgeons are tempted to fix the droop with an implant alone. While this may improve the appearance of the breasts for several months it does not solve the problem on the long run. Eventually the skin stretches and the problem returns. And attempting to replace the implants with a bigger size makes the problem worse. A good breast lift surgery is the best solution to restore the correct proportions for droopy breasts.

Are You a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

You may have noticed after weight loss, child birth, or simply time that your breasts have become droopy loosing firmness and changing from the round youthful shape to the long droopy shape. You may still wear your same bras filling up the cup of your bra, but when not supported, your breasts become droopy. You may find that the top portion of your breasts has become empty, and the areola (colored part around the nipple) has become stretched out. A good breast lift corrects these problems. A breast lift can be performed at any age if the problem of droopy breasts occurs. Mostly candidates opting for a breast lift are those who have had children and breast fed.

Preparing For Your Surgery

Before your surgery, Dr. Metwally will perform a complete evaluation with you. According to your case and your desired goals, Dr. Metwally will explain to you the procedure that best serves your case. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from our center the day of the surgery. You should wear loose fitting clothes and bear in mind that your outfit may get soiled. Do not wear jewelry, contact lenses, or bring valuables to the operating room. Remove all body jewelry from pierced body parts.

Duration of the Surgery

It takes around 2 to 2 and a half hours for Dr. Metwally to perform a breast lift surgery.

Anesthesia Used

The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia (you will be asleep throughout the procedure). You will be ready to leave after 2 to 3 hours from the completion of your surgery

During Your Surgery

During the surgery an incision is made where it circles around the areola, extending vertically down the breast fold and forming an inverted T-shape at the breast crease. Excess skin is then removed and the drooping breast tissue is reshaped. The areola with the nipple is then relocated to a higher position relative to the new lifted breasts. The last step is suturing the incision.

After Your Surgery

After your surgery, you will feel a bit sore for the first 3 days. Dr. Metwally will prescribe to you an antibiotic along with a pain killer to prevent infection and alleviate pain. You will notice some swelling and bruising, these will subside gradually within the first 10 days to two weeks. For the first 5 days your breasts will be covered with plaster. After which you will be given a special bra to wear for 4 weeks. If an implant is placed you may feel some pressure more like muscle pain after a strong exercise. You will be able to move around and won’t need someone to help you at home. The stitches are usually removed 2 weeks after surgery. Most people can go to work after 3 to 5 days. At first, your breasts will appear high and stiff but soon they will rest in their normal position. You may shower one week after surgery. You need to refrain from vigorous activities and exercise for 1 month.

Seeing Your Result

How soon the result of the breast lift starts to show often varies from one person to another depending on many factors. Some people heal faster than others for reasons like age, skin color and skin type. Other factors are related to the amount of skin removed, tissue remodeled and the surgeon’s skills. If your breasts were reduced in size or enlarged along with the breast lift you can see that immediately after your surgery. You will notice that your breasts are smaller/larger and higher in their position. According to Dr. Metwally’s observation of his own patients, most of them start seeing their result as early as the 5th day of the surgery and the final result usually takes 8 to 12 weeks. The scar from the incision takes from 12 to 18 months to fade totally. The result of a good breast lift is usually everlasting unless you breast feed, gain or lose a significant amount of weight.
